Effective Email Marketing - Part One

Before we dive in and begin your email marketing skills development training, and before you even begin using email for your online business, the following is THE MOST IMPORTANT PARAGRAPH YOU WILL EVERY READ IN YOUR ENTIRE TRAINING!

SPAM Will NOT Be Tolerated!

Both Simple As ABC and AmeriPlan® have very strict policies regarding SPAM (also known as UCE - Unsolicited Commercial Email). The Can-Spam Act is very specific regarding the sending of commercial email (business email) online, particularly the minimum amount of information every email must include when it contains business related content. Communication Skills For Email

It's important to understand a few things in regards to the online environment. When you're communicating with people you don't know personally (which is generally the case with email) there is no "know, like, and trust" bond present that would otherwise be there if they had met you in person.

Naturally, developing relationships with people by email is much tougher than in the offline world. Here's a few tips which will help you:

  • Personalize: whenever possible, personalize your subject lines and your salutations with the recipients first name.
  • Consistency: people become uncomfortable if they receive emails sounding like one person once, then an entirely different person the next time. One way you can remain consistent is through your signature (not to be confused with sig tags which we'll be discussing in Part 2). If you have a standard way of signing your emails, use it for every email you send. Also, some people have a standard pre-salutation line they like to add to their emails (ie "From The Desk Of:") ...if you use one, keep using it every time.
  • Friendly: it's very easy for people online to "jump to conclusions" quickly if something in an email is unclear. This can result in what experienced marketers call "flaming" coming your way. Don't respond in anger, but rather try to keep your emails friendly, empathizing, understanding, and when necessary - brief (we'll go into more on "flaming" later).
  • Brief: the old saying "Less Is Best" is a good policy to follow if you want your emails to actually get read... and yet, don't make them so brief as to sound blunt or hard.
  • Easy To Read: you want to use "white space" effectively in your emails. We go into more detail on "chunking" in Part 2...

The Second Secret To Success - Effective Use Of Autoresponders For Automating Your Business

Savvy online marketers know - if you don't automate at least PART of your business online - you're sunk! It may not seem so important when you're first starting out... but it will be CRITICAL for your SUCCESS down the road! One of the BIGGEST mistakes newcomers to online marketing make is they don't have/use effective automation tools to help them build their business.

We'll go into far more detail on this subject in Part 3 and include some sample follow-up emails for you. For now, those who do not understand what autoresponders are, here's a quick intro:

Autoresponders are a valuable online tool which can be used to:

  • capture your contact's information via online form,
  • automatically send info to them after they've completed and submitted the form,
  • follow up with them over time to remind them about their initial interest, keep them interested and encourage them to take action.

Some autoresponder services will allow you to manually add names to your autoresponder for people who have written you and requested information ...BE CAREFUL USING SUCH SERVICES... since the laws are now quite specific about manually adding people to ANY opt-in list. Some services may also provide you with broadcasting features for sending timely information to your entire list. Better autoresponder services also include "merge codes" you can use to personalize the emails you send out.
